Season 2025
Raphinha suffered a muscle injury in the 66th minute of Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Real Oviedo on 25 September 2025. Medical tests later confirmed the problem: a strain in the middle third of the biceps femoris muscle of his right thigh (hamstring area). Initially the club announced a recovery time of about three weeks.
However, the hoped-for quick return never materialised. The winger was ruled out of major matches, including key fixtures in La Liga and the El Clásico against Real Madrid. He briefly returned to training around 22 October, but discomfort re-appeared, meaning further recovery and caution were required.
In short: an injury that seemed manageable turned into a complication, extending what should have been a few weeks of absence into something longer, and arguably more damaging to his—and Barcelona’s—momentum.
The impact on Barcelona
Raphinha’s absence has left a palpable void in Flick’s tactical set-up. When fit, the Brazilian offered:
-
High press and work rate off the ball
-
Versatility to drift inside from the wing and support attacking transitions
-
A direct goal/assist output that placed him among the club’s best contributors
Indeed, during the 2024-25 season he “generated” over 40 goal contributions and ranked among the team’s top creators.
Without him, Barcelona’s attacking and defensive balance has seen strains: press intensity has dipped, and the team have conceded more and created fewer clear chances.
Coach Flick has admitted as much, suggesting that the team miss Raphinha’s impact both in attack and when defending from the front. In those high-stakes matche, like the Clásico, his unavailability has loomed large.
Why it matters so much
- Timing: The injury struck just as Barcelona were aiming to build momentum in La Liga and Europe. A disruption to continuity at that moment hurts.
- Form:Raphinha came into the injury off the back of his best season yet; the drop in availability interrupts the trajectory.
- Squad depth: With other injuries piling up (helping to deepen the crisis), relying on replacements is harder. Raphinha was a starter when fully fit; his absence exposes vulnerabilities.
- Psychological effect: Losing a key attacking figure can affect team confidence, especially in tight matches where his presence might have made a difference.
For Raphinha, the path back is clear but must be approached with care. Barcelona’s medical and coaching staff are managing his recovery more conservatively now, wary of the risks that come with rushing a return from a hamstring injury. After multiple setbacks, the focus has shifted from speed to stability, ensuring he’s fully ready before stepping back onto the pitch.
Regaining full match fitness will be his first challenge. Muscle strains don’t just require healing time; they demand a careful process of reintegration to restore rhythm, confidence, and explosiveness. Once fit, Raphinha will also need to re-establish his place in Hansi Flick’s system, a side that has been forced to adapt in his absence and where competition for attacking roles remains fierce.
The club is targeting a return before the international break, ideally by mid-November if his recovery continues without setbacks. For now, patience and precision will define Raphinha’s road back, and both he and Barça know that a fully fit Raphinha could still be decisive in the crucial stretch of the season.
