Mbappé clinches the Pichichi in his debut LaLiga season with 31 goals.
In the 2024/25 campaign, Robert Lewandowski led the LaLiga EA Sports Pichichi race for most of the season. But Mbappé overtook him on Matchday 35 with a Clásico hat-trick, bringing his tally to 27—two ahead of Lewandowski’s 25 at the time.
He never looked back, adding four more goals in the final stretch to secure the top scorer title in style.

What is the meaning of the word PICHICHI?

The Pichichi Trophy is an award presented annually by the Spanish sports newspaper Marca to the top scorers in both the Primera and Segunda Divisions of Spain. By extension, the term “pichichi” is also commonly used generically to refer to the top scorer of a football tournament. The award is named in honor of Rafael Moreno Aranzadi “Pichichi” (1892-1922), a player for Athletic Club, who was renowned for his exceptional goal-scoring ability during the 1910s and 1920s, prior to the establishment of the Spanish football league.Source:

Despite its prestige, it is not considered an official award, as it relies on reports from Marca‘s correspondents rather than official match records. The trophy was first awarded in the 1952-53 season, with Telmo Zarra being its inaugural recipient. Since then, Marca has symbolically recognized all players who were top scorers in the league before this season. In the 2002-03 season, to commemorate the trophy’s 50th anniversary and the 75th edition of La Liga, Marca presented a special commemorative award, the “Golden Pichichi,” to Zarra and Enrique Castro “Quini” for being the two living Spanish players with the most goals in Primera División.

Lionel Messi holds the record for the most Pichichi awards won, having achieved it eight times, and he also set the record for most goals in a single season with 50 goals during the 2011-12 season.  Source: Real Academia de la Historia
